JAKARTA - President Donald Trump to former President George W. Bush praised the election of Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost of the United States to be elected as the 267th Pope, as history because it was the first time the leader of the World Catholic Church came from Uncle Sam's country.

He was elected to the vote on the second day of the Conflaf of the new Pope election to replace the late Pope Francis last Thursday. He chose to use the name Pope Leo XIV.

Pope Leo XIV (69) was born in Chicago on September 14, 1955, before becoming a missionary in Peru.

Vice President JD Vance, who converted to Catholicism in 2019, praised the whale selection.

"I believe millions of American Catholics and other Christians will pray for their success in leading the Church," Vice President Vance wrote in X.

Meanwhile, former President Joe Biden, a devout Catholic who has spoken about his warm relationship with Pope Francis, also congratulated him.

"Habemus papam - May God bless Pope Leo XIV of Illinois," Biden, the second Catholic president in US history, wrote on social media.

Meanwhile, former President Barack Obama, who started his political career in Chicago, wrote on X: "Michelle and I congratulate you to fellow Chicago residents, His Majesty Pope Leo XIV."

"This is a historic day for the United States, and we will pray for him when he begins the holy work of leading the Catholic Church and is an example for many, regardless of his beliefs," he continued.

Former President George W. Bush said in a statement he and his wife Laura were "happy" to hear the news.

"This is a historic and hopeful moment for Catholics in America and for believers around the world," he said.

"We join those who pray for Pope Leo XIV's success as he prepares to lead a Catholic church, serve those who need him most, and share God's love," he added.
