Tips For Overcoming Asma Symptoms In Children
JAKARTA - Asma in children is often recognized through symptoms such as repeated coughs, especially at night, breathing sounds (rigging), shortness of breath, and heavy feeling in the chest. This condition can interfere with daily activities to the quality of children's sleep.
Therefore, it is important for parents to recognize and understand the triggers and how to control symptoms so that children can continue to grow and carry out optimal activities.
According to dr. Wahyuni Indrawati, Sp.A(K), a child respiration consultant from FKUI-RSCM, it is important for parents to actively evaluate their child's condition with asthma. The goal is to reduce the frequency and intensity of the symptoms that arise.
"If children still show symptoms of asthma, then what we need to explore is whether an effort has been made to avoid the originator. This process is not always easy because we have to recognize and avoid things that trigger," explained dr. Wahyuni in a webinar held in Jakarta.
He explained that the trigger for asthma is very diverse. Some examples are indoor pollution such as cigarette smoke, dust, cooking smoke, pet hair, and dust mites that are often found in the house or furniture.

Apart from pollutants, children should also avoid certain allergens such as cold foods, swab foods that contain MSG, to chocolate. This effort is important so that asthma symptoms do not continue to recur and interfere with children's daily lives.
If all preventive measures have been implemented but symptoms remain, doctors will continue to check to look for other possible allergies related to asthma. This is important in long-term management planning.
Dr. Wahyuni also added that heredity factors play a major role in the emergence of asthma. Children who have a family history with allergies such as food or dust allergies have a higher risk of having asthma. Although it cannot be completely cured due to genetic factors, the symptoms can be controlled.
"Asma arises because of genetic predisposition. Children with allergic talent do have a high sensitivity to certain substances, and this condition cannot be removed because it comes from genes. However, with the right treatment, the symptoms can be controlled," he said.
Finally, he emphasized the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle, including in terms of food intake. Children with asthma should avoid trigger foods and keep the environment clean in order to avoid cough attacks or shortness of breath that can appear, even during night sleep.
