CATL And BYD's Dominance As EV Battery Giants Is Still Undeniable In The First Quarter Of 2025

JAKARTA - The global electric vehicle battery industry (EV) landscape has again shown the dominance of the two main players. Based on the latest data from South Korean market research firm SNE Research, quoted from InsideEVs, Wednesday, May 7, two battery giants from China, CATL (Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Limited), and BYD, maintained their position as the world's two largest EV battery manufacturers in the first quarter of this year.

Overall, the use of global EV batteries from January to March 2025 reached 221.8 GWh, a significant increase of 38.8 percent compared to 159.8 GWh in the same period last year. This figure indicates the rapid growth of electric vehicle adoption worldwide.

CATL recorded an EV battery installation of 84.9 GWh during the first quarter of 2025, an increase of 40.2 percent from 60.6 GWh in the same period the previous year. With this figure, CATL further confirmed its position at the peak with a global market share of 38.3 percent. Remarkably, CATL became the only battery supplier in the world that managed to maintain its market share above 30 percent. This CATL market share also showed an increase compared to 37.9 percent in the first quarter of 2024 and slightly higher than 38.2 percent in the January-February 2025 period.

Meanwhile, BYD also showed impressive performance. The installation of EV batteries by BYD reached 37.0 GWh in the first quarter of 2025, a sharp jump of 62.0 percent compared to 22.8 GWh in the same period last year. Thus, BYD occupied second place with a market share of 16.7 percent. This figure shows an increase compared to the market share of 14.3 percent in the first quarter of 2024, although slightly decreased from 16.9 percent in the January-February 2025 period.

Other players on the top 10 list also showed movement. South Korea's LG Energy Solution is in third place with 23.8 GWh installation, an increase of 15.1 percent on an annual basis, with a market share of 10.7 percent. SK On, also from South Korea, occupies fourth place with a market share of 4.7 percent, followed by CALB from China in fifth place with 3.9 percent, and Higher-tech in sixth position with 3.5 percent.

Completing the top 10 list are Samsung SDI (South Korea) and Panasonic (Japan) which share a 3.3 percent market share in seventh and eighth positions, and Eve Energy (China) in ninth place with 2.6 percent and Svolt Energy (China) in tenth position with 2.5 percent.

In the future, it is estimated that the competition between these battery manufacturers is expected to be even tighter in line with the development of the electric vehicle industry which continues to accelerate.
