Goodbye! Skype App Officially Closes Operations

JAKARTA In accordance with Microsoft's statement in February 2024, support for Skype has finally been discontinued. With the shutdown of Skype services, free and paid users will lose access.

Skype is no longer operating after May 5. Although Microsoft did not make a post about this closure, some users on platform X reported that Skype applications on their devices were no longer usable as before.

If users want to have an online meeting, both free and paid, they can switch to other services such as Zoom, Google Meet, or other services also developed by Microsoft, namely Teams.

Since Microsoft announced the shutdown of Skype, the company has directed its users to switch to Teams for free. In fact, Microsoft makes it easier for users to export Skype data support to Teams.

" Skype users have the option to switch to Free Microsoft Teams, which offers many of the same core features and more. Enter to Microsoft Teams ... using your Skype credentials and contacts as well as your chats will be transferred automatically," Microsoft said, quoted on Tuesday, May 6.

Even though the service has been discontinued, Skype can still be searched in app stores like the Google Play Store. Anyone can download Skype until now, but when the app opens, the menu display and various features in it will not be visible.

Microsoft displays a warning that the platform has closed. Instead, Microsoft includes the 'Start Using Teams' button at the bottom of the screen. If the button is tapped, the user will be directed to the Microsoft Teams page on the Play Store.

"Skype retired in May 2025. You can use Microsoft Teams to exchange messages or make phone calls with your contacts for free," Microsoft wrote in the main view of the Skype app.
