Trent Alexander-Arnold Will Leave Liverpool Free Of Transfer

JAKARTA - Trent Alexander-Arnold will leave Liverpool on a free transfer at the end of his contract this summer.

According to ESPN reports, the defender rejected the salary deal at Anfield which would make him one of the full-backs with the best salaries in football.

The England international player, who is expected to join Real Madrid on a free transfer this summer, announced his decision in a statement on Monday, May 5, 2025.

"I think first and foremost, I want to say that this is not an easy decision."

"There are a lot of thoughts and feelings that have been expressed. I've been here for 20 years, enjoying every minute, achieving all my dreams, achieving everything I want here."

"Try hard every day for 20 years, I come to a point where I feel the need for new changes, new challenges for me as a player and as a person."

"I think now is the right time for me to do that," Alexander-Arnold said.

ESPN in March 2025 reported that Real Madrid are very optimistic about recruiting Alexander-Arnold even though an agreement with the player has not been completed.

Alexander-Arnold joins Liverpool at the age of six, with his contract set to expire at the end of this season.

The 26-year-old right-back, who was appointed vice-captain in the summer of 2023, has made 349 appearances for Liverpool, winning seven major trophies during his time at Anfield.

He will join close friends and team-mate in the England National Team, Jude Bellingham, when he becomes anchored to Bernabeu.

Contract talks with Alexander-Arnold began last season during Jurgen Klopp's final season as manager at Anfield and continue after the appointment of Arne Slot as coach last summer.

Negotiations between Alexander-Arnold and Liverpool, led by Sports Director Richard Hughes, took place in a friendly and constructive manner.

The right-back was offered a significant raise, but Liverpool received the start of this spring that Alexander-Arnold would not be committed to a new contract.

He also informed Arne Slot of his decision to leave last year.

"There are many things that I want to say. The most important thing is a big thank you (to the fans)."

"You all have been there since the beginning with me, you have supported me, always there."

"I feel support, love, everything you have done has never gone unnoticed of me, I love every minute."

"I hope they feel that it was answered and that I have given everything I can for the club."

"I just hope that we can continue to win the game, the noise (around my decision) doesn't reduce the fact about what we've accomplished this season."

"It's been an incredible season. It's been amazing to be a part of it. I just hope that everyone may not think too much about this news and be able to celebrate what other players have done," said Alexander-Arnold.
