Jakarta 2025: There Are Still 119,528 Residents Defecating In The River And Got

Head of the DKI Jakarta Health Office, Ani Ruspitawati, said that currently there are thousands of families who are still doing the practice of defecating carelessly (BABS) directly at rivers or rivers.

"A total of 1,083 or 0.04 percent of families spread across 10 Jakarta sub-districts are still behaving open BABS," Ani told reporters, Sunday, May 4.

Then, the DKI Provincial Government also recorded that 119,528 or 4.6 percent of families spread across 205 Jakarta sub-districts did not have septic tanks.

Thus, they defecate carelessly using latrines with garbage that is not accommodated in septic tanks but in water bodies such as sewers or rivers.

"This condition occurs because of the lack of understanding of residents about the dangers of disposal of waste from latrines to water bodies, besides that it is also due to the limited area of residents' houses to build septic tanks," explained Ani.

Meanwhile, the Head of Wastewater Management Division of the DKI Jakarta Water Resources Service, Robby Dwi Mariansyah, said that his party continues to strive to improve access to wastewater services.

This is done to prevent disease caused by poor surface water and groundwater quality, to improve environmental quality, especially the quality of surface water and groundwater.

"As well as providing alternative sources of raw water and clean water and as an educational means for the community to participate in creating a healthy environment," said Robby.

Furthermore, the DKI Jakarta SDA Office is also developing to manage wastewater through the domestic wastewater management system (SPALD).

SPALD is divided into two categories, namely local SPALD for individual coverage or one housing unit up to a communal scale with a coverage of 2-10 houses, then Centralized SPALD for coverage such as in commercial areas or flats (specific scale), settlement scale with service coverage ranging from 50 to 20,000 people, and urban scope with coverage of more than 20,000 people.

In addition, the DKI Provincial Government and the central government are currently working on the work of the Jakarta Sewerage System (JSS) through the Jakarta Sewerage Development Project (JSDP) strategic project.

"This work is carried out by the Department of Natural Resources and the Ministry of Public Works. JSDP is planned to be completed in 2050. Hopefully, all wastewater treatment in Jakarta will become a centralized pipeline network system," he added.
