Amid Ancman Trump, King Charles Will Open Canadian Parliamentary Session

JAKARTA - King Charles will make a visit to Canada to open a new session of the Canadian Parliament at the end of this month.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said he invited King Charles to deliver a speech to open the Canadian Parliament session on 27 May.

The visit was seen as an attempt to assert Canada's sovereignty amid the threat of US President Donald Trump who wanted to make the country the "51st state" of the US.

"(King Charles' visit) will affirm the sovereignty of our country," Carney said at a press conference reported by ANTARA from Anadolu, Saturday, May 3.

Canada is a former British colony and is now a member of the Commonwealth of the Nation. King Charles is the head of state of Canada.

"He is our highest head of state," said the Canadian PM.

However, King Charles has yet to speak to Trump's repeated statements about his desire to annex Canada.

"King Charles, accompanied by the Queen, will attend the Opening Ceremony of a new session of the Canadian Parliament in Ottawa," Buckingham Palace said in a written statement on Friday.

During the ceremony, King Charles will deliver a speech from his speech to detail the priorities of the Canadian government this year. Usually, the speech is read out in front of Parliament by the Governor-General who represents the British monarchy in Canada.

The live remarks by the British monarchy will be the first time since Queen Elizabeth had the opportunity to open the Canadian Parliament in person during her 1977 visit.

"This is a historic honor worthy and in accordance with the burden we face," Carney said.

"Last Monday, the Canadian people voted for a new government that would face President Trump and build a strong economy," said the Canadian PM.
