Many Criticized, Duolingo Will Replace The Position Of Its Workers With AI

JAKARTA Duolingo made a surprising statement recently. The language learning platform said it would replace workers' positions with Artificial Intelligence (AI).

Not all workers will be affected by this policy change. According to Duolingo CEO Luis von Anh's statement, which was shared via LinkedIn, they will, "stop using contractors in stages to do AI-handable work."

In addition to cutting the number of employees for AI automation, Duolingo will also look for workers who understand AI. Luis explained that AI will be one of the requirements for recruiting and using AI will also be included in the job review evaluation.

Although he knows this change will get a strong reaction from various parties, including its users, Luis stressed that Duolingo will still pay attention to its employees. After all, the AI technology they use is still controlled by humans.

"Duolingo will remain a company that cares a lot about its employees. It's not about replacing the duos with Al. It's about removing obstacles so we can do more with the amazing duos we already have," Luis said.

According to Luis, the decision to switch to AI technology is equivalent to the company's decision when creating mobile apps. In 2012, developers focused only on mobile companions for websites, but Duolingo chose to create mobile apps.

This time, Duolingo believes in the transition of the AI platform. The application must create large amounts of content and this becomes an obstacle because it is done manually. Therefore, AI is needed to shorten the time of manufacture.

"Without Al, it will take decades to improve our content in order to reach more students. We owe it to our students to provide this content to them as soon as possible," Luis explained.

Duolingo's upload regarding the shift to this AI platform received a negative response. Many criticized the company's actions as a 'delayed attempt' for not paying attention to human workers. In addition, not a few said that they would stop using Duolingo as a form of protest.
