Israeli Drone Attack In Lebanon Kills Militant Commander
JAKARTA - An Israeli drone strike in the south of the Lebanese capital killed a high commander of the militant group Jama'a Islamiya.
The attack on Tuesday, April 22 morning killed Hussein Atawi, a major commander at the armed branch of Jama'a Islamiya Islam Sunni, known as the Fajr Troops, while he was driving from his home to his Beirut office.
Fajr forces fired rockets across Lebanon's southern border into Israel during a year-long war that ended last year with a ceasefire agreement.
Israeli airstrikes killed several members of the group during the conflict.
Since the ceasefire, Israel has continued to carry out attacks on Lebanese territory, mostly targeting fighters from the Lebanese armed group, Hezbollah, or its weapons depot.
Israeli troops are also still occupying five hilltop positions in southern Lebanon.
Lebanon, Hezbollah, and Jama'a Islamiya condemned the Israeli forces' attack and presence, calling it a violation of the ceasefire and Lebanon's sovereignty. Israel says the fighters and weapons pose a threat to Israeli civilians.
