The Implementation Of Carbon Taxes Is Still Stalled, Deputy Minister Of Environment Reveals The Rules Are Completely In The Ministry Of Finance

JAKARTA The rules regarding the carbon tax that have been prepared by the government have not yet been implemented. Responding to this, the Ministry of Environment fully submits the preparation and implementation of Government Regulations (PP) regarding carbon taxes to the Ministry of Finance (Kemenkeu).
Deputy Minister of Environment Diaz Hendropriyono, revealed that until now his party has not been involved in technical discussions regarding the carbon tax with the Ministry of Finance.
He said that the Ministry of Finance was still evaluating the urgency of implementing the policy.
"The Ministry of Finance seems to still assess whether this carbon tax should be implemented at this time, or waiting for more trade (carbon) later. I don't know what the considerations are," he told reporters, Tuesday, April 22.
Diaz added that his party had encouraged the Ministry of Finance to immediately issue regulations related to the carbon tax. However, his party can only wait for a decision from the Ministry of Finance regarding the regulation.
"Just wait and see, basically we want to discuss further with the Ministry of Finance regarding the carbon tax whether it needs to be done now or later, or there are other proposals. Because it is finance from the Ministry of Finance," he said.
Meanwhile, Director of Stock Exchange Indonesia (IDX) Jeffrey Hendrik explained that the process of drafting regulations related to the carbon exchange tax is still ongoing.
He explained that the IDX was not very intense in discussing the carbon tax, because its role was only as an exchange organizer, not as a regulator or policymaker.

Previously, the Minister of Environment and the Head of the Environmental Control Agency (BPLH) Hanif Faisol Nurofiq said he would hold a meeting with the Minister of Finance Sri Mulyani Indrawati regarding the implementation of the carbon tax and regulations on the upper limit of sectoral emissions.
Hanif revealed that he would soon meet with the Minister of Finance for discussions, and was arranging a meeting schedule. Regarding the meeting time, Hanif confirmed that it is likely that the meeting will be held starting this week.
"Immediately, friends from BPLH will schedule as soon as I can meet Mrs. (Minister of Finance Sri Mulyani Indrawati). Yes, hopefully this week there will be time for her," he told reporters, Monday, January 20.
Hanif said that he would send a written report to the Minister of Finance so that it could be used as material for a review.

He added that the Government Regulation (PP) related to the carbon tax already exists, and the implementation will be carried out soon.

Hanif hopes that the Ministry of Finance can immediately observe and consider the imposition of a carbon tax.
