Ministry Of Trade Clarifies Textile Products Not Subject To 47 Percent Import Tariffs
JAKARTA - The Ministry of Trade clarified that textile and clothing products from Indonesia exported to the United States (US) are currently not subject to an import rate of 47 percent, but are in the range of 15'30 percent.
"We straighten it out, not 47 percent, but (for textiles) 15'30 percent," said Director General of International Trade Negotiations of the Ministry of Trade, Djatmiko Bris Witjaksono, as reported by ANTARA, Monday, April 21.
Bris explained that the US has three new types of imported tariffs, namely new basic rates, reciprocal rates, and sectoral rates. The tariff that currently affects textile products is the new basic tariff of 10 percent.
The new basic tariff or new baseline tariff has been in effect since April 5, 2025. Meanwhile, 32 percent of the reciprocal tariff against Indonesia has not yet been in effect, as stipulated in the latest US policy regarding the postponement of the application of the reciprocal tariff for 90 days.
Prior to the enactment of the two types of tariffs, the US had imposed various types of tariffs on textile products and clothes from Indonesia with a range of 5'20 percent.
Therefore, the current tariff for textile products is the initial tariff (5'20 percent) plus a new base rate of 10 percent.
"So, the rate of tariffs varies for one sector, for example for textiles and clothing, it will be added to 10 percent, so that later the new range will be 15'30 percent," he said.
Similar additions also occurred in footwear products, from the original 8'20 percent to 18'30 percent; then wood furniture from the original 0'3 percent to 10'13 percent; fishery products from 0'15 percent to 10'25 percent; and rubber products from 2.5'5 percent to 12.5'15 percent.
If later the reciprocal tariff applies in Indonesia on July 9, 2025, the tariff range for textile and clothing products is in the range of 37 52 percent.
The application of the resipprocal tariff of eliminating the new basic tariff or the new baseline tariff is 10 percent, so the basis for the addition of the tariff used is the initial tariff (5'20 percent).
"For textiles that were previously 5'20 percent, plus 32 percent (residual rates) to 37'52 percent," said Bris.
