Kartini Day, Public Transportation In Jakarta Is Free For Female Passengers

JAKARTA In commemoration of Kartini Day which falls on April 21, the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government (Pemprov) provides special gifts to women by making public transportation services free, ranging from Transjakarta, Integrated Moda Raya (MRT), to the Integrated Railroad (LRT).

This policy was conveyed directly by the Governor of DKI Jakarta, Pramono Anung Wibowo, at City Hall, Monday, April 21. According to him, even though many women come from outside Jakarta using paid public transportation, they can still enjoy transportation services in the city for free once they enter the capital city area.

"Although they are still paying for public transportation from outside Jakarta, when entering the capital city, it is free," said Pramono.

He hopes that this incentive can be a form of appreciation as well as encouragement for women, especially in a series of Kartini Day commemorations that are synonymous with emancipation and the role of women in the nation's development.

"This is so that they are also willing to switch to using public transportation rather than private transportation," he continued.

As part of the policy symbolization, Governor Pramono and Deputy Governor Rano Karno chose to go to City Hall using a Transjakarta bus from the Hotel Indonesia (HI) roundabout. They were accompanied by their respective wives, marking the spirit of togetherness and appreciation for women.

To enjoy this free service, female passengers simply come directly to the Transjakarta, MRT, or LRT bus stops or stations. There is no need to tap on electronic cards as usual, because the customer (customer service officer) will immediately invite them to ride without a hitch.

This one-day policy only applies specifically to female users, and is implemented simultaneously in all modes of public transportation belonging to the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government.

Not only free transportation facilities, the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government also provides administrative convenience for female state civil servants (ASN) and female journalists who work in the City Hall environment.

"Especially today, we will provide free for ASN at City Hall if they want to extend their driver's license," said Pramono.

He added that this policy was extended to female journalists covering the City Hall. "I just decided with the Deputy Governor for female journalists who want to extend SIM A or SIM C, for free at this City Hall," he added.

For this purpose, mobile SIM cars have been alerted in the Jakarta City Hall field, so that ASN and journalists simply come to the location without having to go to the Samsat or Satpas office.

This policy, said Pramono, is a form of respect for Kartini's spirit and the great role of women in social life, government, and family. He also hopes that this step will serve as a reminder to all parties that inclusiveness and equality must always be the foundation in building a civilized and friendly city for all.

"We want Kartini Day to not only be ceremonial. But it can be a reflection moment, how the government provides greater space for the role and comfort of women in public spaces," concluded Pramono.
