Review Of Extinction Films In Bukit Duri: More Horror Than Joko Anwar's Horror
JAKARTA - Joko Anwar presents his latest film, the Extinction of Bukit Duri as a marker of 20 years of working in Indonesia. This film is also his latest work working on drama films after dominating a lot with horror stories.
Puncakungan di Bukit Duri menjadi spesial karena film ini menjadi kolaborasi Come and See Pictures - rumah produksi Joko bersama Amazon MGM Studios. Film ini juga merupakan film Indonesia buatan Amazon yang tayang di bioskop.
The suspension in Bukit Duri tells the story of Edwin (Morgan Oey), a teacher who often moves from school to fulfill his promise to his brother, Silvi (Lia Lukman). Edwin promised to find Silvi's child who had been missing for years.
When Edwin arrived at a Bukit Duri High School, a 'disposal' school filled with students who were adventurous and did not care about lessons. Edwin's presence raises questions and even racism from students at the school.
Edwin was not afraid because he was still trying to teach as usual, until he met Jefri (Omara Esteghlal), a student who became the leader of the dominating group. Jefri pressured Edwin and even indifferent to Edwin's teaching.
Edwin's undaunture began to fade after he witnessed various strange events at school. He began to realize his life was threatened when Jefri and his group came to fight him.
Complex and intense. The two words come from the start of the scene. There is no room for the audience to just rest or look forward to calming scenes because this film seems like it doesn't want to wait for the audience and chooses to tell it to itself.

The conflict between teachers and students is also a good opening to question what happened to our nation and our environment. Every character living with fear is a reflection of the traumatic events that are still being brought to this day. It seems that the storytelling is becoming more important because it is relevant to our lives.
Towards the last part felt dragged but it paid off with an extraordinary last fight scene. In addition, the actors' acting also deserves appreciation, but the biggest appreciation deserves to be given to Morgan Oey and Omara Esteghlal.
The depiction of this story also feels horror, even more horror than the horror stories made by Joko Anwar. Is it because the story is close to people's lives, so there are concerns that the story will be realized? I don't know.
The camera technique is also good at highlighting the players' expressions, showing their fear and persistence in betting. It seems that the audience should watch it live to understand the feelings of fear that arise along the film and certainly not a fun viewing experience (not negatively).
This film may give rise to a horror response or contain a trigger warning. This film has a D17+ rating starting from Adults.
Meanwhile, the film Puncakungan di Bukit Duri tayang di bioskop Indonesia mulai Kamis, 17 April.
