KAI Presents 54 New Locomotive Units From Uncle Sam, NIlainya Rp3.56 Trillion

JAKARTA - PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero) or KAI has procured 54 new locomotive units of CC 205 from the United States (US) worth US $ 222.5 million or around Rp. 3.56 trillion.

This step was taken to strengthen coal transportation services in South Sumatra and Lampung.

KAI Vice President Public Relations Anne Purba said that this investment is not just an update of facilities, but a form of real contribution to support national energy resilience and the sustainability of reliable rail-based logistics services.

"Most of the coal transported by KAI is used for PLTU fuel that illuminates houses, offices, to medium and small industries in Java and Bali. This is the essence of our investment, providing great benefits for the wider community," said Anne in an official statement, Tuesday, April 15.

Currently, continued Anne, the first batch of 12 locomotive units is in the process of being sent to Indonesia and is scheduled to start operating in early July 2025.

"Before operation, all locomotives will undergo a series of comprehensive trials to ensure optimal performance and maximum safety aspects in the field," he said.

Throughout March 2025, KAI recorded a volume of coal transportation of 4,446,255 tons, an increase of 5.28 lersen compared to March 2024.

Meanwhile, during January to March 2025, the total transported coal reached 13,299,409 tons, growing 7.58 percent compared to the same period last year.

"In the first three months of this year alone, we have transported 13.29 million tons of coal. This is not just a number, but proof that trains remain an efficient, reliable, and essential logistics mode in maintaining the supply of energy materials," explained Anne.

Anne said the volume of coal represents 82.75 percent of the total transportation of KAI goods during the first quarter of 2025 which reached 16,072,802 tons (unaudited).

"The majority of transportation is carried out in the KAI Divre III area of Palembang and Divre IV Tanjungkarang using the CC 205 locomotive, two crucial areas in the national coal supply chain," he said.

With an efficient and environmentally friendly rail-based logistics approach, KAI not only contributes to energy supply but also reduces dependence on road-based transportation modes that are more prone to congestion and extreme weather.

"We want the public to know that behind the lights that are running at home and industry, there is great work and structured from the rail-based logistics transportation system carried out by KAI," he said.

In the future, continued Anne, by strengthening mature operational facilities and strategies, KAI will continue to be an important pillar in maintaining national energy supply, and encouraging economic growth.

"As well as answering the needs of modern people who are increasingly dependent on reliable infrastructure," concluded Anne.
