An Earthquake With Strength Of 6 Magnitude Occurs In Assam, India

JAKARTA - An earthquake measuring 6.0 hit the northeastern Indian state of Assam on Wednesday, April 28. This earthquake damaged several buildings. Meanwhile, local authorities said they were examining the existence of victims from this incident.

Cited from The Sydney Morning Herald, the United States Geological Survey said the earthquake occurred at a depth of 34 km with the epicenter near the town of Dhekiajuli, 140 kilometers north of the main city of Assam, Guwahati.

Previously the European Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC) estimated the quake was a 6.2 magnitude.

“A big earthquake hit Assam. I pray for the safety of all and encourage everyone to remain vigilant. Follow the updates from all districts”, said Chief Minister Assam Sarbananda Sonowal.

Residents said there were cracks in the walls in several houses and in the floors. People were standing outside on the street, worried about the aftershock.

"Never seen such a big vibration in my life", said Jyotishman Deka, a 20-year-old engineering student.

Strong vibrations were repeatedly felt in parts of northeast India and neighboring Bhutan, forcing hundreds of people to flee from their homes, according to a Reuters eyewitness.

India's National Disaster Management Agency is assessing reports of damage and casualties after the earthquake, said an official at the agency who asked not to be named.
