Jon Batiste Will Receive Ray Charles Award From Grammy Museum
JAKARTA - American singer and songwriter Jon Batiste will be sworn in to receive the Ray Charles 'Architect of Sound' Award at the Grammy Hall of Fame Gala which will take place at Beverly Hilton, Los Angeles on May 16.
Meanwhile, the Ray Charles 'Archect of Sound' Award is an award initiated by the Grammy Museum and the Ray Charles Foundation.
Batiste is lined up to receive this award because it is considered to have done what Charles has done, with his work that transcends the genre, redefining creativity, and leaving an indelible imprint on music and culture.
"As a pianist, songwriter, and band leader who opposes the genre, Batiste's contribution to music and culture is innovative and eternal," reads the description of the Grammy Museum's Instagram upload.
In an official Recording Academy statement on the official website, Batiste was the first to receive this award. He will take the stage for two special shows on the night of Gala, which also features other artists to be announced soon.
Batiste herself said Ray Charles was one of her inspirations in music. The 38-year-old musician said the legend had been an example for musicians across generations.
Ray Charles is a beacon for me, a blueprint. It is a single example of musical genius, artistic freedom, and highest level skills that will continue to inspire mankind from generation to generation and survive the test of time," said Batiste.
"I am honored to receive this award. It is very important for me to continue our cultural heritage in the form of true artistic greatness and leading the way for future generations," he continued
Meanwhile, Michael Sticka as the President/CEO of the Grammys Museum Michael Sticka explained how Batiste was the right person to receive this award first.
Ray Charles is a pioneer artist whose influence knows no boundaries, and Jon Batiste is a true reflection of the legacy. In addition to his extraordinary talent, Jon has become a dedicated partner in advancing the Grammy Museum's mission to make music education more accessible. This is a celebration for two artists who have formed voices from generation to generation," Sticka said.
Meanwhile, Valerie Ervin as President of The Ray Charles Foundation believes that the late Charles, who died 21 years ago, will strongly agree with the appointment of Jon Batiste as the recipient of the first award.
