Myanmar Announces National Mourning Period For Seven Days

JAKARTA - Myanmar, Monday, announced a period of national mourning for seven days after the 7.7 magnitude earthquake that rocked the country.

The national flag will be raised by half a pole as part of the mourning period, the state media report said, MRTV.

The death toll from the earthquake that occurred on Friday (28/3) has surpassed 1,700. Meanwhile, 3,400 people were injured and 300 others have not been found.

Myanmar's junta leader, Min Aung Hlaing, has held telephone talks with Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim to discuss the impact of disasters and rescue efforts and aid.

Russia, India, China, Thailand, the UAE, the United Nations, and many other countries have also sent a special team to search and rescue in addition to humanitarian aid.
