Two Days In A Row, Russia Hits Ukraine's Kharkiv With A Bomb

JAKARTA - Russia bombed Kharkiv city of northeastern Ukraine for the second night in a row. Russian attacks injured two people, sparked fires, and damaged kindergartens and private homes.

The attack on Kharkiv, Ukraine's second-largest city, took place for most of the night and hit the city's largest and oldest districts, said Mayor Ihor Terekhov.

"The sixth explosion was in Kharkiv," said Terekhov via the Telegram messaging application as reported by Reuters, Monday, March 31.

It is unclear what was the target of the attack that came a week after the US-brokered partial ceasefire over the attack on the energy infrastructure and the Black Sea. Both sides accused each other of violating the moratorium.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on Sunday Moscow fired more than 1,000 drones in the past week and called for responses from the US and other allies.

Russia said Ukrainian drones attacked energy facilities last week.

Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022 and has waged a bloody and brutal war for three years.

Both sides have denied targeting civilians, saying their attacks were aimed at destroying each other's infrastructure that was important to war efforts.

Over the weekend, Russian drone attacks in Kharkiv killed two people and injured 35 people, Ukrainian officials said.

By Sinehubov, Kharkiv's regional governor, said on Monday the attack on the evening followed a missile attack on Sunday evening in the city of Kupiansk that left three people injured and destroyed more than 10 houses and a local cemetery.

Kupiansk, to the east of Kharkiv, was captured by Russia at the start of the invasion of Ukraine and recaptured by Ukrainian forces by the end of the year. Now, the city is under renewed pressure from Russia.
