Prabowo: RI Ready To Provide Support For The Recovery Of The Myanmar And Thailand Earthquakes

JAKARTA - Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto said Indonesia was ready to provide support for the recovery of the 7.7 magnitude earthquake that rocked Myanmar and Thailand, Friday, March 28.

"Indonesia is ready to provide all the necessary support for recovery efforts in affected areas," said the President via uploads on the official social media account X (@prabowo) quoting Antara.

The President also expressed his deepest condolences for the devastating earthquake that hit the two countries.

"Our thoughts and prayers accompany the people of the two countries during this difficult time," said the Head of State.

An earthquake measuring 7.7 magnitude with an earthquake point located 13 km north-northwest of Sagaing City rocked Myanmar, Friday (28/3), at around 13.00 local time. The earthquake was reported to have felt strong to the central and northern regions of Thailand, including Bangkok.

Based on data from the US Geological Survey (USGS), the initial earthquake was followed by an earthquake measuring 6.4 magnitudes within 12 minutes of time.

To date, at least 144 people have died and hundreds more have been injured in Myanmar, while in Thailand at least 6 people have died and 117 others have been trapped or missing after a skyscraper in Bangkok collapsed.

Following the disaster, Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra has designated Bangkok as an emergency zone and ordered relevant authorities to mobilize disaster response operations.

Meanwhile, based on local media monitoring, the earthquake reportedly damaged a number of infrastructures in Mandalay, including Old Sagaing Bridge which collapsed, cutting off access between Mandalay and Sagaing. Myanmar authorities have also declared a disaster emergency status.
