With Rare Diseases, This Woman Menua 10 Times More Than Her Original Age

JAKARTA - For many people, getting older is a natural process that occurs over time. However, for Tiffany Wedekind, aging comes much faster than it should be. The woman from Ohio, USA, has Hutchinson-Gilford Progeria Syndrome, a rare disease that makes her body age 10 times faster than anyone else in general.

This 47-year-old woman was diagnosed with Hutchinson-Gilford progeria syndrome at the age of 31. She has resisted the possibility, because this syndrome usually causes her sufferer to die at a young age.

Over time, Tiffany lost all her hair and teeth naturally. She also suffers from aortic stenosis and eventually has to undergo surgery to replace the aorta valve. However, that doesn't stop her from living her life optimally after divorce, starting her own business, and practicing yoga regularly every day to maintain her health.

"Deaths are always in front of my eyes every day. But half of the time, I forgot about that. I lived a lot of lives in one life that was initially unexpected," said Tiffany, quoted from the New York Post page.

Tiffany and her sister, Chad, 39, were both born in this condition, but only realized something was wrong when they entered retirement.

As a child, Tiffany was a very active child and tried various sports and activities. However, when he grew up, he began to see his physical changes. Starting from his teeth starting to break, his hair fell out, and his body remained small. Tiffany only has a height of 132 cm.

In 2008, Chad underwent open heart surgery. From there, they only found out that they had a gene mutation that caused progeria. Unfortunately, Chad died in 2011 from sepsis and heart attacks. His mother, Linda, also died in September 2024 at the age of 75.

"When I first found out about this disease, I thought, 'This is crazy.' Doctor said that I had crossed the life expectancy limit. But the way Chad died was very traumatic. After that, I really realized how quickly life passed," he explained.

After losing Chad, Tiffany decided to prioritize herself. He ended a marriage that had been going on for 8 years, quit his job, and started his own business. Now, he focuses on maintaining his health by regularly practicing yoga and maintaining a diet.

"Sometimes I forget that I have progress, because I'm busy living life," he said.

According to him, many people are not aware that the body is a machine that must be treated properly. He is also concerned about seeing people who actually damage their own bodies.

Tiffany lives a healthy lifestyle, does not smoke, and only occasionally drinks alcohol. He hopes to continue to develop his business and travel in the future.

However, the operation to replace the aorta valve that he has to go through remains a scary thing for him. Even so, Tiffany is still trying to live life in a positive way.

"I'm acationist. I want people to stop complaining about aging and start seeing it as a privilege. Many complain about aging and wrinkles, even though it's not important. What's more important is how we live our lives," he added.

"I am unique. I am like a fish that keeps trying to get out of the dark. I am only 132 cm high and 25 kg deep, but I have great strength." he continued.
