ByD Sues For This, BMW Indonesia: Protecting Intellectual Property Rights

JAKARTA - Recently, the automotive world in the country has been shocked by the issue of luxury car manufacturer Bayerische Motoren Werke Aktigeselschaft (BMW AG) suing the Chinese brand, namely BYD regarding the name dispute of M6.Communications Director of BMW Group Indonesia, Jodie O'tania, said BMW Group affirmed its commitment to protecting intellectual property rights and maintaining the quality and exclusivity standards of BMW products. "Regarding the use of the M6 brand by other parties in Indonesia, BMW Group as the legal owner of the M6 brand has taken legal steps to protect the identity and reputation of the BMW brand," he said, when contacted by VOI, Tuesday, March 11. He further said, BMW M6 is an iconic model in the BMW M line, known globally for its high performance, innovative technology, and exclusivity. "The use of the M6 brand by other parties has the potential to cause confusion in the public," he added.

Jodie O'tania, said this legal step was taken not only to protect BMW's rights, but also for the benefit of customers in Indonesia. BMW Group Indonesia has always ensured a driving experience that complies with BMW premium standards and exclusivity. From data from the Kemankum Intellectual Property Database, BMW AG has actually registered M6 since August 20, 2015 with application numbers D002015035540 and M6 registered in the 12th class category, types of motorized vehicle goods or services and parts of its structure.

Meanwhile, BYD M6 has also been registered with a substantive inspection status. The application number DID2024122107 has been submitted since November 22, 2024. The class categorized is also the same as the M6 registered by BMW.
