Grobogan Embankment Broken Into Spotlight, BNPB Claims Embezzlement In Java Still Prepared

JAKARTA - The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) stated that efforts to rejuvenate river and coastal embankments on the island of Java are being prepared in stages, which are being discussed at the ministerial level.

"For example, the embankment in Grobogan, or the Citarum River embankment whose construction is still being built in the Dutch period has begun to age, the ability to hold water has decreased, but of course all of this is gradual," said Head of the BNPB Disaster Data, Information and Communication Center Abdul Muhari as reported by ANTARA, Monday, March 10.

According to Abdul, the discussion regarding the rejuvenation of embankments as well as the normalization of river flows and river boundaries was discussed by the relevant technical ministries.

He gave an example of the Ministry of Public Works which has issued a regulation by the minister of river border, the Coordinating Ministry for Infrastructure and Regional Development, which designed the overall rejuvenation design, to the Coordinating Ministry for Human Development and Culture for community relocation plans if needed.

The river flood disaster which is often exacerbated by tides/rob in Jabodetabek to floods due to the breakdown of embankments as happened in the Tuntang River, Grobogan Regency, Central Java, Cinangka River Embankment, Purwakarta Regency to embankment vulnerability in East Java became the basis for discussing the ministerial level.

"BNPB is also included in it. The current focus is in Java, West Java, Central - East Java. If you have to dredging the downstream river, it must coincide with the spatial layout upstream, it is impossible for downstream rivers to be dredged, but sedimentation upstream is still high because deforestation," he added.

Referring to data previously reported by BNPB on Sunday (9/3), as many as 156 families in Cikaobandung Village, Jatiluhur District, Purwakarta Regency, West Java were evacuated due to flooding which was exacerbated by the breakdown of the Cinangka River embankment on Saturday (8/3) afternoon.

Then the Grobogan BPBD Pusdalops stated that water was sent from the upstream of the Lusi River, Glugu River and Tuntang River which caused the water to overflow, causing two embankments of the Tuntang River and Kliteh River to burst on Sunday (9/3). There were 21 villages in six sub-districts in Grobogan Regency that resulted in 280 residents from Ringinkidul and Batur Agung villages being displaced.
