Meta Presents Facial Recognition Features To Prevent Facebook And Instagram Accounts From Hacking

JAKARTA Meta has launched a new way to deal with hacked Facebook and Instagram accounts. Account owners can now recover their accounts using facial recognition technology.

This account recovery feature was launched on March 4 in the United Kingdom (UK), the European Union (EU), and South Korea. In the first few weeks, the feature will be rolled out to community leaders in the UK and EU before being extended to ordinary communities.

"Kami kini meluncurkan langkah-langkah yang menggunakan teknologi pengendaan wajah untuk membantu mendeteksi dan mencegah penipuan serta memungkinkan pemulihan akun yang lebih cepat di platform kami," kata Meta dalam sebuah keterangan.

As the initial recipient of the account recovery feature, public leaders will see notifications on the Facebook and Instagram applications regarding this feature. They can choose to use the account recovery feature with facial recognition or not.

Later, this feature will be expanded with the support of selfie videos so that users can verify their identities without problems. This new support is considered the best option to restore accounts that change hands.

"Video selfie verification uses optional facial recognition technology, and is a faster and easier way for people to verify their identities," Meta said.

Meta guarantees the security of this feature as they have not reviewed the privacy and risk in advance. To keep user data safe, Meta provides this feature as an optional step and promises to clear user's face data once verification is complete.
