Extortion Scandal At The Riau Islands Police: 9 Police Sentenced, 2 Fired

JAKARTA A extortion scandal rocked the Riau Islands Regional Police (Kepri Police), after nine personnel from Sub-Directorate II of the Narcotics Research Directorate were proven to have committed an ethical violation by extorting a drug user.

From the results of the Police Code of Ethics Commission (KKEP) trial led by Kombes Pol Tri Yulianto on Friday, March 7, two members were sentenced to dishonorable dismissal (PTDH) or dismissal, while the other seven were subject to demotion sanctions.

Extortion Mode: Forced Victims To Apply For Online Loans

Citing ANTARA's report, Saturday, March 8, this case began at the end of 2024, when an officer with the initials Kompol CP asked for Rp20 million from a drug user as a "peace money" so that he could be released.

Because the victim did not have cash, Kompol CP then took the victim's ID card and registered it as an online loan customer (pinjol). After the loan funds were disbursed, the money was handed over to Kompol CP, and the victim was finally released.

The Head of Public Relations of the Riau Islands Police, Kombes Pol Zahwani Pandra Arsyat, emphasized that the institution would be firm and transparent towards members who abuse their authority.

"The Riau Islands Police are committed to giving awards to outstanding personnel, but for those who violate the rules, especially abuse of authority, they will definitely be processed ethically," said Pandra, quoting ANTARA, Sunday, March 9.

This firm action is in line with the 10 Commander Wish of the Riau Islands Police Chief, Inspector General Asep Safrudin, who emphasized integrity, professionalism, and increased public trust in police institutions.

"Police personnel should be at the forefront of maintaining security and order, not disappointing the public," added Pandra.
