Damage To The Credibility Of The DPR, MKD Asked For Action On Ahmad Dhani's Sections Statement

JAKARTA - The National Commission on Violence Against Women (Komnas Perempuan) condemns the sexist statement made by DPR member Ahmad Dhani. This statement is considered to be harassing women, degrading the dignity of the nation, and containing elements of racism.

"Komnas Perempuan condemns the statement of DPR member Ahmad Dhani. His statement demeaned women by placing them only as a means of reproductive and sexual servant for their husbands," said the head of Komnas Perempuan, Andy Yentriyani, quoted by ANTARA, Friday, March 7.

According to Andy, this kind of sexist statement contradicts Indonesia's commitment to realizing gender equality and justice. This has been regulated in Law Number 7 of 1984 concerning the ratification of the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW), and is in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly the 5 Goals concerning gender equality.

CEDAW emphasized that public officials, including policy makers, have a responsibility not to take discriminatory actions against women and take concrete steps to eliminate all forms of discrimination.

"Given that Ahmad Dhani's statement has the potential to violate women's human rights, tarnish the image of the DPR, and undermine the honor and credibility of Commission X, which is also in charge of the education sector, Komnas Perempuan encourages the Council's Honorary Council (MKD) to follow up on this issue," said Andy Yentriyani.

Previously, Ahmad Dhani suggested that the naturalization of football players be expanded for those over the age of 40 and are widowers. He believes that these players should be married to Indonesian women in order to produce 'Indonesian born' descendants who have better football skills.

This statement was later strengthened by a suggestion that football players who were naturalized as Muslims were allowed to marry up to four women. Ahmad Dhani made this controversial statement at the DPR Commission X working meeting on Wednesday (5/3/2025).
