114 Schools Damaged By Bekasi Floods, Government Intervenes

BEKASI - Minister of Basic and Secondary Education (Mendikdasmen) Abdul Mu'ti said the floods that hit the Bekasi area, West Java, caused 114 school buildings to be damaged.

Affected educational facilities cover elementary to high school levels, both in the City and Regency of Bekasi.

Mendikdasmen Abdul Mu'ti mengatakan, sekolah di Bekasi yang terdampak banjir Bekasi mencakup 90 SD, tujuh SLB, sembilan SMA, lima SMK, dan tiga SMP.

"For elementary schools, there are 45 schools in Bekasi Regency, as well as in Bekasi City, there are 45, a total of 90 schools. There are two SLBs in Bekasi Regency, five in Bekasi City, a total of seven. There are four in Bekasi Regency and five in Bekasi City, a total of nine. Then, there are five SMKs in Bekasi City, and three junior high schools in Bekasi City. So, a total of 114 schools were affected," explained Abdul Mu'ti, in his statement, Thursday.

Regarding school recovery measures due to the Bekasi flood, Abdul added, the government will distribute aid in accordance with the level of damage and budget allocation available. However, the responsibility for improvement is not only in the hands of the central government.

"For schools that have suffered severe damage due to the Bekasi flood, we will try to help according to the existing budget. However, because the implementation of education is also under the authority of the provincial, district and city governments, we will coordinate which one is the central responsibility and which one is handled by the regions," said the Minister of Education and Culture regarding the damage caused by the Bekasi flood.
