UN Allocates 110 Million US Dollars To Compensate For Humanitarian Aid Cuts

JAKARTA - The United Nations on Thursday announced the allocation of US$110 million from its emergency funds to compensate for hasty cuts in humanitarian aid worldwide, particularly by the US.

The statement stressed that the fund would "strengthen vital aid in the 10 least-funded and neglected global crises in Africa, Asia, and Latin America."

A third of the total number will be given to Sudan, which is currently suffering from the worst humanitarian crisis in the world, as well as to neighboring Chad, which has many refugees fleeing fighting in Sudan.

"For countries exhausted by conflict, climate change, and economic turmoil, severe budget cuts do not mean the loss of humanitarian needs," said UN humanitarian aid chief Tom Fletcher, quoted from WAFA March 6.

The administration of President Trump cut more than 90 percent of US International Development Agency (USAID)'s foreign aid contracts and more than 58 billion US dollars in Washington's overall worldwide relief.
