There's A Smell Of Luck In Liverpool's Victory Over PSG

JAKARTA - Liverpool manager, Arne Slot, did not deny that his troops were lucky to beat Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) in the first leg of the Champions League last 16 at the Parc des Princes, Thursday, March 6, 2025, early morning WIB.

The Dutch coach also admitted that Les Parisiens was a much better team in that match.

As is known, substitute Harvey Elliott scored with his first touch in the 87th minute to give Liverpool a 1-0 win.

The advantage will make it easier for the Reds because they will take turns to host PSG at Anfield next week with an aggregate advantage.

Despite successfully securing a narrow victory, PSG dominated the match more. They thought they had taken the lead in the first half when Khvicha Kvaratskhelia's kick resulted in a goal. However, it turned out that the goal was disallowed due to offside.

"If we were in a draw, we would have been lucky. It's clear to everyone. I think they are a much better team today."

"Especially in the first half, they had many chances, three or four big chances."

"In the second half, they were still a better team, still had a lot of shots on target. However, most of them were from outside the penalty box."

"I knew before the game. I saw today again how much of quality they and all the players were."

"All the shots from outside the penalty box were seen at certain speeds that only came from top players, which is why Alisson still has to make some big saves."

"We were lucky that the goal was offside in the first half. I am very happy that in the difficult situation here the referee did not make it difficult."

"It doesn't always happen in away games. In that game, we had chances in transition, but we waited until the last moment, and we hurt them," said Arne Slot.

Liverpool must rely on goalkeeper Alisson to make some great saves to keep them in the game.

Despite losing to PSG for most matches, Arne Slot dismissed the notion that his team had performed poorly in Paris.

"We don't play below the standard. It's pure PSG quality and the way they play this season."

"I can say once again, all the underlying statistics show that they are the best team in Europe to date."

"They have faced Arsenal, Bayern Munich, Atletico Madrid, and Manchester City and still have the best basic statistics."

"They showed it today. I already know it, but the players also saw it today, our fans and the whole of England."

"Luis Enrique made an amazing team here after three transfer exchanges. So much speed, so much work ethic, so much quality in midfield, how do they handle the ball."

"It was an extraordinary challenge for us to qualify with results. We knew it would be a tough game in a week (in the second leg)," said Arne Slot.
