Unusual, Tesla Faces A Drop In Drastic Sales In China Will New Model Y Be A Rescue?

JAKARTA Tesla is the only Western automaker that has in recent years been showing off at the Chinese automotive market despite being hit by a number of local manufacturers who are increasingly dominating.

But this year is different, after Tesla's sales figure fell sharply in February 2025. Based on data from the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA), launching from the Teslarati report, March 5, Tesla China only recorded wholesale sales of 30,688 units. This figure decreased drastically by 51.47 percent from 63,238 units in January, and fell 49.16 percent from 60,365 units in February 2024.

As one of Tesla's biggest markets, China plays a crucial role in the company's expansion strategy. Then, what is the main cause of this slump?

One of the main factors suspected of contributing to Tesla's decline in sales is the transition to the latest Model Y. As is known, Model Y became the spearhead of Tesla's sales in China. Ahead of its latest model premiere shipment at the end of February, Tesla seems to be more focused on spending old Model Y stocks, impacting a significant decline in the month's sales figures.

"This strategy could be Tesla's way of cleaning up old model inventory before the launch of the latest version," said an automotive analyst in Shanghai.

"However, the impact was quite large and made the sales figures in February look bad," he added.

Overall, Tesla China posted a total wholesale sales of 93,926 units in the first two months of 2025. This figure is still 28.74 percent lower than the same period last year, where Tesla managed to sell 131,812 units.

With China's increasingly fierce electric car competition, Tesla must immediately find a way to get consumer attention again. Can the new Model Y bring about change?

It is known that Tesla China officially introduced the latest Model Y on January 10, 2025, with its inaugural shipments starting on February 26, 2025. This model comes with a number of improvements that are claimed to be more attractive to consumers, including:

Meanwhile, Bloomberg News previously reported that Tesla had stopped part of the Model Y production line in Shanghai Giga from January 22 to February 14 in order to optimize equipment for the latest models. In addition, the Model 3 production line also stalled from January 26 to February 3.

This move may aim to improve production quality, but it is undeniable that this temporary suspension could also be one of the causes of the decline in sales figures last month.

With the newest Model Y already being sent, all eyes are now on the Chinese market response. Will the innovation Tesla has offered be enough to attract consumers back and increase sales figures?
