Xiaomi Introduces Modular Phones With LaserLink Technology At MWC 2025
JAKARTA Xiaomi has again attracted attention at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2025 by introducing the concept of their latest modular phone, the Xiaomi Modular Optical System. This device is not just a phone with advanced cameras, but also features LaserLink technology, a revolutionary optical communication system that allows ultra-fast data transfer up to 10Gbps.
LaserLink is at the heart of this modular phone concept. This technology uses near-infrared lasers to transmit raw data directly from camera modules to image signal processors (ISPs) in mobile phones. With transfer speeds in nanoseconds, this technology ensures a lack of latency and without compromise in image quality.
The main advantage of this system is its ability to free the camera design from the physical limitations of the mobile body. With a modular approach, Xiaomi can bring larger sensors, stronger lenses, and flexibility to replace the camera module according to user needs.
Optical System Modular: Professional Photographography In Handling
This Xiaomi concept phone uses a 35mm lens with an aperture f/1.4, combined with a 4/3 100MP Light Fusion X Type sensor. Thanks to its innovative design, Xiaomi managed to reduce the lens height by 50% compared to traditional designs.
In addition, this system is also equipped with a precision autofocus and physical focus ring for more accurate manual settings. This module is directly connected to the phone, so users don't need to charge or store photo results separately, because the power is taken from the phone and the photo results are directly stored in the gallery.
Xiaomi claims that this system is capable of providing a better dynamic range, extraordinary low light performance, as well as a more natural separation of subjects. While deep testing cannot be done, the first impression of this technology is already quite impressive.

More Than Just A Camera: Potential Future LaserLink
This LaserLink technology has far greater potential than just supporting modular cameras. With high speed and low latency, this technology can be used for:
An external AI module that can be installed and released to add artificial intelligence to IoT devices. 6G connectivity modules for laptops and PCs without the need to rely on a cable or Wi-Fi connection. Other modular accessories, such as high-quality audio devices or additional sensors for industrial purposes.
Although this technology looks promising, the Xiaomi Modular Optical System is still an exclusive prototype that is not ready for commercial markets. If later available to consumers, most likely users will have to buy a special lens compatible with this system, as well as a new phone that supports LaserLink technology.
While still in the concept stage, Xiaomi has provided an interesting picture of the future of modular phones and how optical communication technology can revolutionize the smartphone industry.
