Minister Of Industry Agus Opens Opportunities For IPhone 16 To Be Sold In Indonesia Before Eid

JAKARTA - The government ensures that currently iPhone 16 products cannot be sold in Indonesia. However, 40 percent of Apple's Domestic Component Level (TKDN) certification has begun to be processed by the Ministry of Industry (Kemenperin).

Minister of Industry (Menperin) Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita said the certification was processed after Apple and the Ministry of Industry signed a number of cooperation agreements or MoUs in Singapore on Wednesday, February 26.

"And as much as possible, added value for the Red and White will be created. Thank God, today we have signed an MoU between the Ministry of Industry and Apple," Agus said at a press conference at his office, Wednesday, February 26.

With the signing of the MoU, Agus estimates that Apple's TKDN certification will be issued during Ramadan. After the certification is issued, the next process is at the Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs (Komdigi) for distribution permits for iPhone 16 products.

"Yes, within Ramadan is out (TKDN certificate), there is no need for Komdigi to complicate this (iPhone 16 distribution permit)," he said.

The collaboration between the Ministry of Industry and Apple is included in the new investment cycle for the period 2026-2028 with an investment value of 160 million US dollars or around Rp. 2.62 trillion (assuming an exchange rate of Rp. 16,356). Agus explained that the 160 million US dollars investment was in the form of hard cash.

The investment commitment was slightly higher than Apple's proposal which was rejected by the Ministry of Industry in 2024, which amounted to 100 million US dollars.

By choosing Scheme 3 investment, namely innovation development, Apple is not required to build an iPhone factory or other important iPhone components in the country.

However, Agus said, the giant technology company from the United States (US) remains committed to establishing research and development centers or Research and Development (R&D) in Indonesia and involves a number of well-known universities in the country.

Agus is also optimistic that the capital disbursed by the iPhone manufacturer will have an impact on the Indonesian economy of up to 72.3 million US dollars.

"From now on, the Ministry of Industry and Apple will jointly formulate the so-called manufacturing roadmap of Apple until 2029. This means that this will strengthen the commitment or expand the existence of Apple's double value chain in Indonesia," Agus explained.
