UN Security Council Adopts United States Draft Resolution On War In Ukraine
JAKARTA - The United Nations Security Council on Monday adopted a resolution to the United States draft on the anniversary of Russia's three-year invasion of Ukraine taking a neutral position against the conflict.
The brief resolution reflects Trump's changes to the US policy on Ukraine after taking office last month and his softer stance on Russia.
Russia's ambassador to the United Nations Vassily Nebenzia acknowledged "constructive changes" in US positions against the conflict. He told the council the resolution was "not an ideal resolution," but "a starting point for future efforts towards a peaceful settlement," quoted by Reuters on February 25.
The 15-member UN DK has reached a stalemate during the war and has been unable to take any action.
On the other hand, the 193-member UN General Assembly has repeatedly supported Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity and called for fair, lasting, and comprehensive peace in accordance with the UN Charter.
The US previously failed to convince the General Assembly to pass the same three paragraph resolution adopted by the Security Council on Monday.
The resolution mourns the loss of life in the "Russian-Ukraine conflict", reiterating that the United Nations' goal is to maintain international peace and security and resolve disputes peacefully, and urgently end conflicts quickly and lasting peace.
The Security Council adopted US resolution with 10 votes in favor, while France, Britain, Denmark, Greece, and Slovenia abstained. Russia voted in favor after failing to change it and veto Europe's offer to add a language that supports Ukraine.
"This resolution puts us on the path to peace. This is a crucial step, but what should make us all proud," US Ambassador to the United Nations Dorothy Shea told the council.
"Now we have to use it to build a peaceful future for Ukraine, Russia and the international community," he continued.
Meanwhile, British Ambassador to the United Nations Barbara Woodward told the council the peace terms in Ukraine were important and had to "send a message that aggression was fruitless."
"That is why there is no equality between Russia and Ukraine in the way this council refers to this war. If we want to find a path to sustainable peace, the council must explain the origin of the war," he said.
Meanwhile, French Ambassador to the United Nations Nicolas de Riviere said, although his country "committed fully to peace in Ukraine, we call for a comprehensive, fair and lasting peace, and of course not the victim's surrender."
Earlier, the UN General Assembly on the same day adopted a two-resolution, one designed by Ukraine and Europe, another US draft amended by the assembly to include the language it has long supported Ukraine. The voices gave Ukraine and European countries a diplomatic victory over Washington.

"This war has never only been about Ukraine. It is about the basic right of every country to live, to choose its own path, and to live free from aggression," Ukrainian Deputy Foreign Minister Mariana Betsa told the assembly before the vote.
The amended US-designed resolution won 93 votes in favor of the assembly, while 73 abstained countries and eight voted no. Russia failed in an attempt to convert US texts to incorporate references to the "roots of the cause" of the conflict.
The resolutions drawn up by Ukraine and European countries were passed with 93 votes in favor, 65 abstention, and 18 votes in disagreement. Apart from the United States, several other countries that voted against Russia, North Korea, and Israel.
