Partnering With Google, Qualcomm Chipset Will Support Up To 8 Years Of Android Update
JAKARTA Qualcomm has established a new partnership with Google in extending the lifespan of Android phones. Both are targeting support for Android updates and security patches for up to eight years.
This will be the longest support period in the industry as average mobile phone manufacturers support up to four years of Android updates. The longest Android update support is currently only on Samsung and Google phones, which is seven years.
The eight-year Android update support will be applied to phones that use the Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset. Phones with Snapdragon 8 and 7 chipsets will also receive these updates, but they only apply to eligible devices.
This biggest increase is part of Qualcomm's commitment to providing the best value to the chipsets they produce. That way, there will be more OEMs or phone manufacturers that will support the longest Android updates.

"We are raising standards, providing more flexibility for our OEMs and ultimately improving the user experience. We are excited to see more OEM devices supporting Android OS efficacy as soon as possible," said Senior Vice President and General Manager of Phone Administration Qualcomm Technologies, Chris Patrick.
While Patrick doesn't give a sign of when this update will be implemented, Qualcomm explains that the eight-year Android support will be supported by Android 15. In addition, not all phones with the Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset will support this change.
The reason is, the decision of eligible devices is in the hands of OEM. If manufacturers don't want to bring support for eight years, mobile phone users with the chipset will receive a lower duration of Android updates.
