Launches 33 Times Of Lava Falls, Mount Merapi Status Level III Alert
SLEMAN - Mount Merapi's volcanic activity continues to show high intensity by being observed dozens of incandescent lava avalanches to a number of rivers in Sleman and Magelang Regencies.
Based on the latest report from the Geological Disaster Technology Research and Development Center (BPPTKG) for the observation period Monday (24/2/2025) at 00.00-06.00 WIB, the maximum glide distance reaches 1,600 meters.
" 33 lava avalanches were observed towards Kali Sat or Putih, Bebeng and Krasak with a maximum sliding distance of 1,600 meters," said Head of BPPTKG Agus Budi Santoso in his official statement.
Mount Merapi, which is located on the border of the Special Region of Yogyakarta and Central Java, is still Level III (Alert). The main potential danger today is lava avalanches and hot clouds that can have an impact on the south-southwest sector, especially the Boyong River with a maximum distance of 5 kilometers (km), as well as the Bedog, Krasak, and Bebeng rivers with a maximum of 7 km. In the southeast sector, danger covers the Woro River as far as 3 km and the Gendol River as far as 5 km.
During the observation period, BPPTKG recorded a number of seismic activity of Mount Merapi, including 37 lava avalanches earthquakes, with an amplitude of 2-15 mm and a duration of 69.79-174.86 seconds.
In addition, 11 times the hybrid/many-phase earthquake, with an amplitude of 2-9 mm and a duration of 9.49-12.6 seconds and one distant tectonic earthquake, with an amplitude of 6 mm and a duration of 38.65 seconds.
In addition, visual observations show weak pressure crater smoke with white and thick intensity, rising as high as 150 meters above the crater peak.
BPPTKG urges the public not to do activities in potential hazard areas, especially in the south-southwest and southeast sectors that are prone to lava avalanches and hot clouds.

"The public is also asked to be aware of the potential for lava when it rains and volcanic ash disturbances from the eruption of Mount Merapi," he continued.
If there is an increase in activity, such as significant lava avalanches, BPPTKG will immediately review the status of Mount Merapi. People who are around the slopes of Merapi are expected to always monitor official information from the BPPTKG and the authorities to anticipate further impacts.
