Autoimmune Disease Causes Brian Setzer Not To Play Guitar

JAKARTA - Experienced rockabilly musician Brian Setzer revealed that he can't play the guitar right now. The lead vocalist and guitarist Stray Cats says autoimmune disease makes him lose his ability.

Through an upload on his Instagram account, Setzer shared the news, and informed fans about his current condition.

The 65-year-old musician said his hands felt cramps and his guitar playing skills were reduced, towards the end of Stray Cats' summer tour in 2024 which ended in August.

"Since then I have known that I have an autoimmune disease. I can't play guitar," said Setzer, citing an Instagram post, Wednesday, February 19.

"There's no pain, but it feels like I'm wearing a pair of gloves while trying to play," he continued.

Currently, Setzer says his condition is getting better, but he hasn't been able to hold the guitar and play it yet.

I've seen some progress in terms of holding a pen and tying up a shoe strap. I know this sounds ridiculous, but I've been at a point where I can't even do that," he said.

"Luckily, I have the best hospital in the world that is not far from my house. It's called the Mayo Clinic. I know I will succeed, it only takes time."

This confession was responded to by several world guitarists, one of whom was Steve Vai, who believed Setzer would find his abilities again.

"Brother Brian, you are a soldier! Don't be in a hurry, you are recovering, and we all hope you recover completely and achieve optimal health. Greetings to you," Steve Vai said in the comments column.

"SEND LOVE AND ADVANTAGE," said Nancy Wilson.

"Hope you recover quickly. Keep fighting," said Noodles from The Offspring.
