Mount Lewotobi Men Lontarkan Abu As High As 900 Meters

LABUAN BAJO - Geological Agency of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) recorded the eruption of Mount Lewotobi Laki in East Flores, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), with a height of ash ponds reaching approximately 900 meters.

"There was an eruption of Mount Lewotobi Laki, on February 17, 2025 at 05:58 WITA with a column of ash height of approximately 900 meters above the peak or approximately 2,484 meters above sea level," said Observation of the Lewotobi Fire Post, Herman Yosef Mboro in a public report received in Labuan Bajo, quoted from Antara, Monday, February 17.

He added that in the eruption the height of the ash column was observed to be gray with thick intensity leaning towards the northeast.

The eruption was recorded on a seismogram with a maximum amplitude of 29.6 millimeters (mm) and a duration of approximately one minute 42 seconds.

He said that currently the status of Mount Lewotobi Men is still at level IV or Alert status.

Therefore, his party issued a recommendation by urging the community around Mount Lewotobi Men and visitors or tourists not to carry out any activities within a six-kilometer radius of the eruption center of Mount Lewotobi Male and sectoral Southwest - North - Northeast as far as seven km.

The public is also advised to be calm and follow the direction of local governments and not to believe in issues whose sources are unclear.

People around Mount Lewotobi Men are aware of the potential for rain lava flooding in rivers that originate at the top of Mount Lewotobi Men in the event of high-intensity rain.

"People affected by the ash rain of Mount Lewotobi Men wear masks or nose coverings to avoid the danger of volcanic ash in the respiratory system," he said.
