Desak-Desakan Tragedy At New Delhi Railway Station, 18 People Died

JAKARTA - At least 18 people died due to jostling at the New Delhi, India railway station, the local media report NDTV quoted local officials and medics as saying.

"At least 18 people died of jostling on Saturday afternoon at the New Delhi railway station," local officials told NDTV on Saturday, February 15.

Meanwhile, according to the chief doctor of the New Delhi LNJP Hospital, 11 others were injured in the incident.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi then expressed his condolences for the incident at the New Delhi station.

"I express my condolences to all those who have lost their family members and I pray that those who are injured can recover soon," Modi said via social media X.

He also ensured that local officials were on standby "helping all affected by the jostling incident."

According to the director of the Delhi fire department, Atul Garg, to the Hindu daily, the cause of the urge is still unknown.

However, preliminary reports show that the cancellation of two train trips to Prayagraj or Allahabad for the Kumbh Mela pilgrimage ritual resulted in pressure and chaos at two station platforms.
