Trump's Conversation With Putin Makes Europe Rush To 'Declare' Full Support For Ukraine

JAKARTA - When US President Donald Trump agreed with Russian President Vladimir Putin to start negotiations to end the war in Ukraine, European leaders reaffirmed their commitment to Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity.

The European Union pledged to strengthen support for the country.

In a joint statement, Germany, Britain, France, Poland, Italy and Spain affirmed their common goal of supporting Ukraine until a "fair, comprehensive, and sustainable" peace, peace that not only guarantees Ukraine's interests but also overall European security.

"We are ready to increase our support for Ukraine. We are committed to independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity in the face of the Russian aggression war," the statement said.

European leaders also stressed the importance of working closely with the US in designing strategies that could put Ukraine in a strong position in every negotiation in the future.

They emphasized that both Ukraine and Europe should be the main parties in every peace talk and highlighted the need for strong security guarantees for Kiev.

"Just and sustainable peace in Ukraine is a key requirement for strong trans-Atlantic security," the statement continued, saying European continent security remains "a shared responsibility."

Meanwhile, Trump separately discussed the three-year war in a conversation with Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Wednesday (12/2).

The talks came after US Secretary of Defense, Pete Hegseth, stated that returning Ukraine to the border before 2014, when Russia annexed Crimea, was unrealistic, and confirmed that the US does not see NATO membership for Kiev as part of a negotiated conflict resolution.
