Pertamina NRE And KPI Cooperate To Take Advantage Of Gas Suar Refinery To Electricity
JAKARTA - Pertamina New & Renewable Energy (Pertamina NRE) and PT Kilang Pertamina Internasional (KPI) have officially collaborated to develop the Flare Gas to Power project. This agreement was marked by the signing of the Head of Agreement (HOA) by the CEO of Pertamina NRE, John Anis, and the President Director of the Pertamina International Refinery, Taufik Aditiyawarman. In parallel, project exposure activities were also held at the Balongan Refinery, which will be the location for the implementation of this project.
Pertamina NRE CEO John Anis said that the Gas to Power Flare Project is Pertamina's strategic step in supporting the energy transition and achieving Net Zero Emissions (NZE) in 2060. This technology utilizes flare gas (flare gas) to convert to electrical energy.
"This initiative is in line with our vision to optimize existing energy resources, as well as significantly reduce carbon emissions," said John Anis, Thursday, February 13.
Technically, he continued, the Gas to Power Flare works by catching exhaust gases through flares that were previously burned in the air to be further processed through a purification system and directed to a gas turbine or generating engine. The resulting energy is then used for refinery operations or channeled to the power grid.
"This process not only increases energy efficiency but also participates in protecting the environment," added John.

The President Director of KPI, Taufik Aditiyawarman, emphasized that through this synergy, KPI has the potential to reduce CO2 emissions by 80,000 tons of Co2Eq per year, reducing gas consumption for Boilers by more than 2.5 Million Standard Cubic Feeds per Day (MMSCFD) and saving fuel costs by more than 9 million US dollars per year.
"This means that this project not only reduces greenhouse gas emissions, but also increases the operational efficiency of the refinery," he said.
The synergy between KPI and Pertamina NRE in this project is a concrete example of how strategic collaboration within Pertamina is able to produce innovative solutions that have a positive impact, both in terms of the environment and the economy.
"We believe this collaboration will be an inspiration for other energy projects in the future," concluded Taufik
