Pertamina Refinery Produces 14.5 Million LS MFO Barrels Throughout 2024

JAKARTA - PT Kilang Pertamina Internasional (KPI) reported that it has produced Marine Fuel Oil Low Sulphur (MFO LS) of 14.5 million barrels throughout 2024.

It is recorded that 4 refineries managed by KPI have the ability to produce LS MFO products, namely Dumai Refinery, Balikpapan Refinery, Plaju Refinery and Cilacap Refinery.

"Marine Fuel Oil Low Sulphur or ship fuel with low sulfur content is a type of fuel used in the shipping industry. This product is certainly more environmentally friendly because it has low sulphur content," said KPI Corporate Secretary Hermansyah Y Nasroen, Monday, February 10.

Hermansyah explained that LS's MFO products increasingly have a market, especially after the implementation of strict international regulations related to sulfur (flood) emissions from ships.

This standard was issued by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) in 2020. This new IMO standard was then outlined in the Decree of the Director General of Oil and Gas No. 0179.K/DJM.S/2019 which stated that the fulfillment of sulfur levels in MFO fuels began effectively from January 1, 2020.

"Throughout 2024, KPI will be able to produce MFO LS of 14.5 million barrels. Of the total production, about 50 percent are produced from Dumai Refinery," explained Hermansyah.

The LS MFO product was first produced by the Dumai Refinery in 2020. Initially, the product was used for ship refueling purposes that docked on the Dumai Refinery jetty.

The process of producing LS MFO products does take time. Preparation for LS MFO products started in July 2019.

A series of processes ranging from written simulations, laboratory analysis to field experiments have been carried out until they are finally launched in February 2020

After Dumai Refinery, in March 2022 the Plaju Refinery also produced LS MFO.

"Furthermore, in May 2024, the production source will increase with the ability of the Cilacap Refinery to produce LS MFO. The first lifting has been carried out through the MT Bloom Ship as much as 200 thousand barrels," explained Hermansyah.

With the existence of 4 refineries capable of producing LS MFO, of course, it will further strengthen the supply chain of these products. According to Hermansyah, this will certainly be the company's competitive advantage.

"With the production capability at 4 refineries owned by KPI, of course, it will further ensure the certainty of product availability," concluded Hermansyah.

For information, LS's MFO is not the only low-striphur fuel product produced by KPI. Some time ago, KPI has also introduced a gasoil fuel product equivalent to Euro 5 with the Diesel X brand. This product is produced from the Balongan Refinery.
