Liverpool Win 4-0 Over Spurs, Should Be Better

JAKARTA - Liverpool beat Tottenham Hotspur with a score of 4-0 in the second leg of the Carabao Cup semifinals, Friday, February 7, 2025, early morning WIB.

The big win put the Reds ahead 4-1 on Spurs and have the right to advance to the final at Wembley to meet Newcastle United who beat Arsenal.

Even so, captain Virgil van Dijk said he was disappointed with some aspects of his team's performance during the dominant victory.

Goals from Cody Gakpo, Mohamed Salah, Dominik Szoboszlai, and Van Dijk made Liverpool beat Ange Postecoglou's helpless Spurs team at Anfield.

Liverpool took the lead from the first minute and dominated them in such a way that Spurs failed to fire on target in the match.

However, Van Dijk criticized their performance in the first half, which only managed to score one goal.

"We need a complete performance. I'm still thinking in the first half we can increase the intensity and make them even more depressed. That's what I've said (to the team) too."

"However, winning here like we did tonight was great for the team and the club. Now we are focused on the FA Cup," Van Dijk told Sky Sports.

Van Dijk wants his team to play with high intensity throughout the round. However, a lot of momentum was lost in the first half because Liverpool's playing intensity loosened.

"You certainly want to start with high intensity. I think the game was stopped several times in the first half. It broke a bit of the momentum there was."

"We still do it occasionally, but I feel we can do a little more and make them (Spurs) even more uncomfortable because obviously we know they have the quality to play."

"They want to play in the middle and have a pattern. Things like this, if you bring intensity into the game, then anyone can make a mistake."

"I think in the second half we managed to do it. It was a beautiful win today," said Van Dijk explaining the details.

This result keeps Liverpool's chances of winning all four major trophies alive.

Arne Slot's side have a six-point lead over Arsenal at the top of the Premier League, are looking forward to the Champions League round of 16, and face a trip to Championship's Plymouth Argyle, in the FA Cup Fourth Round.

Arne Slot said he was very happy with the physical efforts his players showed against Spurs.

"For us to be so aggressive without the ball. It doesn't tell you anything about Tottenham."

"That should tell you about our work rate without the ball. I think that's what stands out for me, playing against a very good team in creating chances, barely conceding (shots)."

"In the end, this is a good achievement," Arne Slot told a news conference.

Liverpool will face Newcastle in the Carabao Cup final on March 16, 2025. Before that, they will appear in the FA Cup on Sunday, February 9, 2025.
