Google Photos Will Add Synthed Digital Watermark On AI Equipment Editing Results
JAKARTA Watermark for images produced by Artificial Intelligence (AI) is important for Google. Therefore, Google will bring Synthed to Photos, its photo storage platform.
Synthed is a technology that embeds digital watermarks into text, audio, images, and videos edited using Reimagine, a generating AI-based feature, in Magic Editor. This watermark will not look as direct as watermarks in general.
"Starting this week, Google Photos will start using Synthed," Google said in its official broadcast, quoted on Friday, February 7. "This helps people identify AI-generated content quickly and easily."
To find out if a photo has been edited using an AI tool from Google, users can tap on the More option on the image and search for the caption 'About this image'. If detected using AI, a watermark from Synthed will be visible.

However, Google explains that not all images get Synthed watermarks. This can happen because there are not many edits done using Reimagine. That way, Synthed finds it difficult to detect the use of AI in the image.
For example, according to Google, is the change in the color of a small flower in the background of an image. This means that the smaller the edited results using AI, the harder it is to detect and label its watermark in metadata.
"We will continue to collect input and evaluate additional solutions for our users, while finding more ways to increase transparency around AI editing in Google Photos," Google explained.
