Russian Television Reported Fake About 'Soviet Code' In DeepSek

JAKARTA - A false news report claiming that China's artificial intelligence (AI) application, DeepSek, is based on the secret code of the Soviet Union has aired on Russia's national television. The incident reflects the strong nostalgia in Russian society for technological glory in the past.

Russia's satirical news site, Panorama, which publicly states that its content is fictional, published an interview with DeepSeek founder Liang Wenfeng. In the interview, Liang is claimed to praise Soviet programmers for their contribution to technology development.

The fake report mentions that the code used by DeepSek was actually developed in 1985 by a team of scientists led by Viktor Glushkov. Glushkov was known as the creator of the Soviet Union's first personal computer in the 1960s. He also designed a data processing network that aims to help plan the Soviet-centred economy. Some Russian scientists even argue that the network has early features of artificial intelligence.

This fake news quickly spread widely and was finally reported as a fact by the Rossiya One national television channel. In addition, this report was also raised by various influential social media accounts in Russia.

"The Soviet Union is not only the most educated and advanced country. The Soviet Union is a scientific and technological civilization," wrote the leader of the Russian Communist Party, Gennady Zyuganov, in a post on Telegram. However, the upload was later deleted.

Despite its long history of science and technology, Russia currently only ranks 31st out of 83 countries in the Global AI Index released by UK-based Tortoise Media. The index measures the implementation, innovation, and investment in artificial intelligence. Russia lags far behind the United States and China, even behind fellow BRICS members such as India and Brazil.

Meanwhile, Russia continues to closely observe the AI progress achieved by China. The latest DeepSeek model released last month has rocked the global tech landscape, and Russia is trying to learn from this success.
