One Person Dies, 15 Others Arrested While Trying To Enter Canada From The US
JAKARTA - One person was killed and 15 people arrested while trying to enter Canada from the United States in three incidents in recent weeks, Canadian police said highlighting efforts to secure borders as US President Donald Trump demanded crackdown.
As reported by Reuters on Thursday, February 6, Canadian Royal Police Assistant Commissioner Lisa Moreland said the people came from different citizenships and were not ready to face Canada's very cold winter, and no fentanyl was found.
Their identities were not released due to privacy laws.
The news conference came days after Trump on Monday suspended high tariff threats against Canada and Mexico.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has received a tariff suspension after speaking with Trump on efforts to deploy new technologies and personnel along the border and launch cooperation efforts to combat organized crimes, fentanyl smuggling, and money laundering.
The current suspension of this tariff prevents trade wars, which are expected by economists to harm the economy of all parties involved.
Moreland, which features thermal imagery and air footage, said RCMP is seeking to clarify Canada has the technology and resources to keep territorial borders safe.
In three recent incidents, a man drove to Canada from the port of Coutts that connects Montana and Alberta, and tried to escape when he stopped for inspection.
The man, a US citizen, died of injuries from a firearm he did himself when chased by the police.
The day before, police arrested four adults and five teenagers near Coutts after receiving information from US border patrol agents, while six people were arrested after crossing into Manitoba province in central Canada on January 14.
Moreland said the men tried to enter Canada in bad weather -20 to -30 Celsius (-4F to -22F).
"They don't have hats, gloves, gloves, or anything we usually see in winter in Canada," Moreland said of six people arrested in Manitoba.
