Serie A Prepares Medical Guidelines For The Return Of Competition

JAKARTA - Serie A is likely to return since it was suspended on March 9 due to the COVID-19 pandemic or the corona virus. However, the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) must prepare medical guidelines in advance to anticipate this possibility.

The FIGC said the medical committee held a video conference on Wednesday to analyze and establish a guarantee protocol for football if it was allowed back on.

The FIGC wants to finish the season in order to reduce financial losses. They stated that they were ready to continue the competition until September or October if needed.

Italy has been one of the countries hardest hit by the virus outbreak and its death toll rose to 15,362 on Wednesday with a total of 124,632 cases. A number of Serie A players are among those infected.

"If and when we get the green light to restart competition gradually, then the world of football must be ready," said FIGC President, Gabriele Gravina.

"Given the role football plays in Italian society, I am confident that we can make an important contribution to the entire country."

It said the health protocol would include tests to be carried out by players exposed to the virus with special attention to the respiratory and cardiovascular systems.
