Barcelona Lost 7 Million Euros From Nico Gonzalez's Move To Manchester City

JAKARTA - Barcelona lost more than 7 million euros as part of Nico Gonzalez's 60 million euros transfer to Manchester City after Porto used a clause that reduced the amount the Catalan club would receive.

Gonzalez, 23 years old, joined Porto from Barcelona for an initial fee of 8.5 million euros in 2023.

The Blaugrana maintains the option to re-submit the midfielder for 30 million euros and is entitled to 40 percent of capital gains from each transfer in the future.

However, before Gonzalez moved to Manchester City, Porto paid 3 million euros to use a clause that reduced any pay cut by Barcelona to 20 percent and canceled their option to sign Gonzalez back.

"The club has used an initial purchase option of 20 percent of the transfer capital gain with a value of 3 million euros," Porto said in a statement.

"It also dropped the option to re-recruit Barcelona players for 30 million euros, which can be held until 30 June 2025."

"Barcelona maintains the right to 20 percent of capital gains," read the Portuguese club's statement again.

So, in total, Barcelona earned 13.32 million euros from Gonzalez's move to Manchester City on Monday, February 3, 2025, in addition to the 8.5 million euros paid by Porto two years ago.

They received 3 million euros from Porto for 20 percent of the capital gain and then 10.32 million euros for 20 percent of their shares in capital gains at any cost.

Thus, the total revenue from Gonzalez's two moves to 21.72 million euros.

However, the clause held by Porto forced Barcelona to fail to get an additional 7.3 million euros or alternative opportunities to re-recruit Gonzalez and potentially move him to Manchester City for a bigger profit.

Gonzalez joined Barcelona's academy in 2013 and featured in 37 first-team games before joining Porto, through a loan spell in Valencia, on a permanent contract.
