Sea Fence Makes 4 Thousand Fishermen Lose IDR 24 Billion Because Fuel Consumption Increases To Ship Damage

The Ombudsman revealed that 4,000 fishermen were affected by the 30.16 kilometer sea fence (km) in Tangerang waters, Banten. They suffered losses of up to IDR 24 billion.

This was conveyed by the Head of the Banten Province Ombudsman Representative Fadli Afriadi in a press conference on allegations of neglect of legal obligations related to the construction of the Banten sea fence. He explained that an interview had been conducted on the affected fishermen representatives.

"Based on our calculations, at least, this is a minimum of the losses experienced by nearly 4,000 fishermen, reaching at least Rp. 24 billion," said Fadli in an activity broadcast on the Indonesian Ombudsman's YouTube, Monday, February 3.

Fadli said this loss arose for three reasons. The first is the increase in consumption of diesel fuel (BBM) between 4-6 liters due to the existence of the sea fence.

"Then the catch (fish, red) is reduced and the damage to the ship we counted," he said.

Fadli said the calculation was carried out from August 2024 to January 2025. "We can't get a definite number because we don't do a census, yes," he said.

"We only conducted interviews with fishermen that we hope represent the losses suffered by fishermen," he continued.

Furthermore, Fadli explained that the Ombudsman had received reports about the sea fence since November 28 and December 2, 2024. They then followed up by conducting field checks on December 5, 2024.

Then a request for information from related parties such as the Banten Provincial DKP, the Coordinating Ministry for the Economy, KKP, ATR/BPN, KLH, BIG, Banten BPN Regional Office to Tangerang Regency Kantah.

In addition, Fadli also said that the examination of the law until a copy of the document had been carried out. "Expert information from the Center for Coastal and Oceanal Resources Studies of LPPM IPB University (subsequently implemented, ed) on January 21," he concluded.
