Beware Of Cataracts At A Young Age, Eye Drops Can Be The Cause

JAKARTA - Catarics are often associated with the aging process, but in fact, these conditions can also occur at a young age, even in children. These conditions are usually characterized by complaints of eye health problems such as blurred views, tenuous eyes, to foggy.

According to dr. M. Arief Herdiawan, Sp.M, an Eye Specialist from Eka Hospital Bekasi, cataracts at a young age can be caused by several factors, one of which is a history of health such as diabetes to the use of eye drops.

"The use of eye drops carelessly is also a trigger factor that is often not realized," said doctor Arief after the Free Cataract Operations event initiated by Eka Hospital, Perdami and the Yarsi Foundation in Bekasi, recently.

Doctor Arief continued, the content in eye drops is designed to resemble tear fluids, but some have active components with hard properties.

Some eye drops contain active substances such as antibiotics and steroids, which if used in the long term and without a doctor's supervision can cause serious side effects, including cataracts.

"If used excessively or in years, this can cause complications that ultimately threaten vision and risk causing blindness," he explained.

In addition to eye drops, cataracts can also occur due to collisions or eye trauma. Direct eye injuries can lead to changes in the lens structure which leads to lensing riots, although the patient's age is still relatively young.

Then exposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun in the long term also has the potential to damage the protein in the lens of the eye and trigger early formation of the dwarf.

"Avoid using eye drops without a doctor's prescription, especially those containing steroids. If you have a history of diabetes, it is important to control blood sugar levels so that there are no complications in the eyes," he said.

In preventing cataracts at a young age, the use of sunglasses with UV light protection is also highly recommended to reduce direct exposure that can accelerate eye lens damage.

Then when doing activities that are at risk of eye injuries, such as extreme exercise or work involving small particles in the air, it is better to use eye protection to avoid collisions that can damage the lens.

"If you experience symptoms such as blurred vision, seeing the light circle around the source of light, or experiencing excessive sensitivity to light, immediately go to an eye specialist," said doctor Arief.
