KKP Arrests Two Ships That Violate The Provisions For Fishing Equipment

JAKARTA - The Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) arrested two illegal fishing fishing fishing vessels with the mode of violating fishing gear at WPPNRI 718, Aru Sea.

It is suspected that the two ships were widely reported on social media because their presence sparked conflict at sea with fishermen.

The Director General of Marine and Fishery Resources Supervision (PSDKP) of the KKP, Pung Nugroho Saksono, said that the two ships with the initials KM 109 weighing 236 GT and KM MAJ 21 with a weight of 250 GT were captured by the Tiger Shark 06 Supervisory ship operating in the Aru Sea, WPPNRI 718, on Wednesday, January 29, 2025.

The man who akrap called Ipunk said that based on the results of inspections in the field, the ships had a bagged Shrimp Hela Net (JHUB) fishing gear with the mode of modifying the bag size mesh, which was 1.5 inches from what should have been more than 2 inches.

After inspection, the fishing boat was not Taiwan's foreign fishing boat as reported, but an Indonesian fishing boat made abroad and has a fishing permit (SIPI) issued by KKP numbered 33,24,0001,114,6798 and 33,24,0001,114,6767.

After being examined, the fishing gear used a bagged Shrimp Hela Net (JHUB)/Coffice shrimp, but in practice of catching and operating the ship did not use Turtle Excluder Device (TED) and did not use a weight and the net eye was smaller than the proper provision, which was more than 2 inches.

"In other words, the ship has changed its function to a fish trawler which should have been a bagged shrimp hela net (JHUB)/concentration shrimp," said Ipunk in a written statement, quoted on Saturday, February 1, 2025.

Related to this, the Directorate General of PSDKP will impose administrative sanctions and provide recommendations to the Director General of Capture Fisheries to review the licensing.

The Director General of Capture Fisheries (DJPT) of the KKP, Lotaria Latif, said that his party would follow up on recommendations from the Directorate General of PSDKP for the suspension of permits.

"We will act according to the provisions and we will process the licensing suspension," he said.

The evidence that was secured included two vessels, fishing gear, 54 crew members (ABK), and six foreigners as fishing master on board. The ship has been secured at the Tual PSDKP Base for further action.

This is in line with the direction of the Minister of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (KP), Sakti Wahyu Trenggono, in realizing a blue economy policy, the use of fishing gear must be in accordance with the rules so that excess fishing does not occur that threatens the sustainability of capture fisheries management in WPPNRI.
