Yogyakarta Regional Police Calls Victims Of Umrah Fraud PT HMS Continues To Increase To 164 People

YOGYAKARTA - Yogyakarta Special Region Police (Polda DIY) said the number of victims of fraud by the Umrah bureau of PT HMS continued to grow to 164 people with a total loss of Rp5.62 billion.

The Head of Sub-Division of Public Relations of the Yogyakarta Regional Police, AKBP Verena Sri Wahyuningsih, explained that the number was based on complaints that were submitted to the PT HMS Umrah Bureau Fraud Victim Complaint Post from January 23 to 30, 2025.

"The total number of victims was 164 people, with a total loss of around Rp5,624,500,000," he said in a statement quoted in Yogyakarta, Antara, Friday, January 31.

According to Verena, for eight days, the post received 18 complaints, including five police reports at the Yogyakarta Regional Police, one police report in Poresta Yogyakarta, and one police report at the Kulon Progo Police Station, and 11 complaints via WhatsApp.

Based on data on Tuesday, the Yogyakarta Regional Police received an additional one police report from West Java with two victims.

Those with a total loss of Rp68 million were promised to leave for the Holy Land on December 24, 2024.

Next, on Wednesday, January 29, the post received one report via WhatsApp from Jakarta with 11 victims.

"The loss is around Rp. 605 million with a planned departure on December 24, 2024," he said.

Previously, the Directorate of General Criminal Investigation (Ditreskrimum) of the Yogyakarta Regional Police arrested a woman with the initials ID (46), a suspect in a case of fraud and embezzlement of Umrah departure which resulted in a loss of victims of around Rp. 14 billion.

ID, a resident of Mergangsan, Yogyakarta City, is the owner of the Umrah travel agent PT HMS. The suspect's mode is to offer Umrah trips at a relatively low cost, including Rp. 33 million to Rp. 48 million for business class.

However, after the victim made the payment, the departure never happened according to the promised schedule, and the funds that had been transferred were not returned to the victim.
